Ernest Leonard was born in Soham (Newmarket Q1-1897 3B:546), son of George and Sarah LEONARD (née SMITH).
1901 census... Aged 4, he was at Great Fen Drove, Soham with his father George LEONARD [35] horsekeeper; his mother Sarah [33]; brothers Alfred [12], George Richard [10], Henry [8] and John Thomas [2]; sister Sarah Melinda [6]. All were born in Soham. 1911 census...Aged 14, farm labourer, he was at Black Wing Drove, Fodder Fen, Soham with his parents; brothers George Richard, Henry (both farm labourers), John Thomas, Ellis [9] and Arthur Edward [1]; sisters Sarah Melinda and Rebecca Agnes [3]. The new siblings also born in Soham. His mother had lost 3 of her 12 children. He married Alice Maud Mary BLOXHAM [21-1-1895] in 1915 (Chesterton Q4-1915 3B:1427). Their daughter was born on 7-2-1916. Widow's address was Blackwing Drove, Prickwillow. |

On the 27th March the Battalion took over front line trenches at Fleurbaix. The war diary has a simple report "One man killed on working party" for the 6th April, which of course was Ernest
